Scholarships Description: The Group of Semiconductor Components is an internationally leading research group on novel integrated circuit devices, with a strong track record on component reliability research. We conduct multidisciplinary research ranging from chemistry via physics to electrical engineering. The chosen candidate will end up as an expert on the physics and long-term behavior of silicon-based high voltage transistors. He or she will work closely together with the Dutch company NXP Semiconductors manufacturing these devices. These devices play a key role in many modern electronic systems such as hybrid cars. Reliability is of essential importance in such transistors. This project aims to determine and investigate the main degradation mechanisms that are responsible for failure of high voltage transistor switches. The research team will approach the challenge by experimentation, analysis and modeling. Based on the findings, methods to increase reliability will be defined and tested. During the project, these methods will be implemented in novel high voltage switch designs with increased lifetime, which will be manufactured at NXP. Moreover accelerated lifetime tests will be developed that can be used for product qualification. By improving switch design and by preventing degradation this project will help to pave the way for increasing the performance and reliability of high voltage switches.

Scholarships Description: The studentship offers the opportunity for a gifted individual to work on a problem of great significance, supported by two scientific groups of world standing. The candidate should have a first or upper second Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, physics or a similar discipline. A familiarity with crystallography or molecular modelling, or computer programming ability, would be useful additional experience. You will gain experience in a wide variety of computational methods, database searching tools and statistical analysis methodology in a discipline which is of direct relevance to the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries. There will also be opportunities to interact with
other groups within UoB and CCDC.
Many pharmaceuticals are formulated as salts to enhance their physical properties. CSP of salts is difficult because salts have, among other complexities, two independent ions which makes searching for potential stable crystal structures time consuming. To address the problem, this research project will develop and validate algorithms to limit the range of the CSP search to those structures that fall within the statistical distribution of salt bridge geometries observed in the vast number of experimental crystal structures stored in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). The key objective of this project is to deliver a validated approach whereby CSD derived information can be integrated into a CSP package to steer the prediction of molecular salt structures.
The 3 year project is fully funded by the CCDC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and was awarded by the Chemistry Innovation Knowledge Transfer Network to CCDC in collaboration with the University of Bradford. International Scholarships Job Description: Wind power technology, the most competitive renewable energy technology, is quickly developing. The size of individual wind turbine continues to grow and the penetration of wind power into power grid is increasing rapidly. Consequently, the impact of wind turbines on electric power security and quality becomes more and more important and presents great challenges and demands on wind turbine performance. In order to provide reliable and high quality power, the wind turbine should be appropriately designed and controlled to present the desired characteristics. Clearly, good modelling and simulation techniques are cost-effective methods to investigate the wind turbine performance and to optimize the design and control of wind turbines.
Many of the problems of gearboxes and bearings encountered in wind turbines of today originate from a lack of detailed knowledge of the transient load through the drive train of the wind turbine. The project aims to develop a modelling tool, which can be used to simulate various wind turbine systems, study the effects of various key components and their variations on the system performance.
The main task is to analyse the transient loadings in a complete drive train, including the gearbox and the generator.
Specific points are:
* Establish data for rotor and drive train
* Modelling of rotor and drive train
* Interaction with other subsystems
* Model evaluation and verification
PhD College Scholarships Qualifications

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on the design and development of an intelligent system to enable ubiquitous monitoring and assessment of patients’ pain-related moods and movements. Based at the UCL Interaction Centre (www.uclic.ucl.ac.uk), the student will be part of a multidisciplinary group within the EPSRC-funded project Emo&Pain at http://www.uclic.ucl.ac.uk/people/n.berthouze/EPain/
Emo&Pain is a large EPSRC-funded research project that brings together researchers from UCL, Imperial College and Leicester University to improve self-management in patients with chronic pain. Chronic pain is one of the big challenges facing healthcare providers in the western world due to the rising number of people with chronic health problems.
Under the supervision of Dr Nadia Berthouze (main PI), and in collaboration with a team of psychologists, clinicians and computer scientists (e.g., machine learning), the student will develop a system to recognize patients’ emotional states and pain level. This recognition will be based on body movement cues as well as EMG signals captured during self-directed physiotherapy sessions. The project will involve signal processing as well as the application of machine learning techniques. The recognition system will be integrated in a multi-modal (including face and voice) integration system to be developed as part of the Emo&Pain project. Applicants should have a first or upper-second (2:1) class honours degree in Computer Science, a strong background in Machine Learning (e.g., through a MSc programme) as well as excellent programming skills (Matlab, Java, C++, or C). Candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills. British and EU nationals who meet the UK residency requirements, as defined by EPSRC, will receive a full award covering both tuition fees and a tax-free annual stipend starting at £15,590 per annum. The post is also open to overseas candidates, who will receive the annual stipend, however, only a portion of the total tuition fee, equivalent to the UK fee (£3,466 per annum), will be covered.

Job Description: The department of Social Research Methodology, Faculty of Social Sciences, VU University Amsterdam, has a vacancy for a PhD position, funded by a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
Research project: The influence of family and school on future life plans of adolescents
This research project aims to study the future life plans of adolescents. Attention will be paid to their ambitions for their educational and occupational careers, and to their intentions with regard to family formation. An important question is to what extent – in this era of individualization – the future plans of adolescents are still influenced by their social environment: the parents, the school, and the peer group, and whether this influence depends on the field of planning.
The PhD student is expected to:
* analyze survey data with sophisticated multi-level modelling techniques;
* conduct a small data collection among the schools that participate in the study;
* write articles for international peer reviewed scientific journals;
* write a PhD thesis;
* participate in the activities of the research programme Social Inequalities and the Life Course (SILC) of the Department;
* contribute to the teaching tasks of the Department.
Eligibility
* candidate with a relevant university Masters degree in Sociology, Demography or another Social Science;
* excellent knowledge of quantitative methods of analysis is required.;
* the PhD research candidate needs to be proficient in spoken and written English.
Additional information
The PhD position will be available at the VU University Amsterdam in the Department of Social Research Methodology. The appointment will be available initially for 12 months.
