Postdoctoral Position, Blood Brain Barrier Alterations during Sepsis in Human and Animal Models, Technology
Job Description: Septic shock is a majorcause of mortality in intensive care units and it’s often associated with encephalopathy that has been associated to poorer outcome in survivors. Alterations of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) could favour the entry of pro-inflammatory mediators and neurotoxic molecules. MRI studies confirm the presence of vasogenic oedema in septic shock patients. However, alterations of the BBB remain to be confirmed, reproduced and understood in more depth in animal models that more closely mimic human sepsis.
Our hypotheses are the following: during sepsis
• early modification of cerebral blood flow regulation is linked to the (peri)vascular production of vasoactive mediators (prostaglandins, nitric oxide, serotonin).
• physical disruption of the BBB results in an increased permeability for neurotoxic molecules and initially occurs as a consequence of the action of pro-inflammatory mediators.
• further increased cellular permeability of the BBB occurs as a consequence of endothelial expression of adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, VCAM-1) and subsequent transcellular migration of circulating leukocytes into nervous tissue as well as sustained activation of microglial cells.
Then we will study:
• fine alterations of the BBB during sepsis in both human and animal material using immunohistochemistry and 3D reconstruction of the different cellular and molecular components
• regulation of cerebral endothelial permeability to (i) solutes (trans and paracellular diffusion) and (ii) cellular elements, including leukocytes and pathogenic microorganisms (trans- et para-endothelial cellular migration) as well as (iii) the expression of transporter, tight junction proteins (occludin, claudins, JAMs) and adhesion molecules (VCAM-1, ICAM-1, CD44) in organotypic cultures of the BBB and reconstituted models exposed to septic conditions.
Because collaboration with hospitals, we dispose of a unique brain bank (already available) of patients that have died from septic shock with or without neurological complications (Sharshar et al., 2004 ; Sonneville et al., 2009) as well as of animal and cellular models to study alterations of cerebral blood flow and the BBB in conditions mimicking sepsis.
We offer a one year post-doctoral position (with the possibility of extension to two years) in Paris in Institut Pasteur in the unit “Human histopathology and animal models” headed by Fabrice Chrétien MD, PhD.
This position is open for a German citizen with her/his PhD completed. Cell culture as well as animal model experiences are required.

Specifically, the postdoctoral fellow will assist the PI in the design, synthesis and development of complex carbohydrates. The post doc will optimize the ligand frameworks to discriminate between variants. The individual will also be involved in the biophysical characterization of the compounds, and studies to compare different diagnostic platforms. They will also mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratories. The applicant will have excellent oral and written presentation skills.

The Center for Policy Research at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Health Economics or Health Services Research starting September 1, 2010. The appointment will be for one year with possible extensions to five years, pending budgetary considerations. The candidate will conduct research as part of the Upstate Research Health Network (UHRN), consisting of Syracuse University, Cornell University, University of Buffalo and University of Rochester. The UHRN is tasked with understanding the geographic and procedural composition of U.S. healthcare markets as they relate to insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs to patients. The candidate will have access to a unique nationwide health insurance claims data base to conduct guided research. The candidate is required to be in residence for the duration of the fellowship. Candidates for the position will have completed a Ph.D. in Economics, Econometrics or Health Services Research and should show promise of significant scholarship. As the research is empirical and data-driven, proficiency in at least one statistical analysis software package is required.

Job Description :The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program (CPFP) is accepting applications for Cancer Prevention Fellows May 1- September 1, 2010. The CPFP is a postdoctoral fellowship program that trains individuals from a variety of health and biomedical disciplines to become leaders in the field of cancer prevention and control.
As part of the program fellows receive:
- The opportunity to obtain an M.P.H. degree at an accredited university during the first year, followed by mentored research with investigators at the NCI. Research opportunities exist across the spectrum of cancer prevention research, including: epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical services, laboratory, nutritional, and social and behavioral sciences.
- Competitive stipends, paid health insurance, reimbursement for moving expenses, and a travel allowance to attend scholarly meetings or training.
The typical duration in the CPFP is 4 years (year 1: master’s degree; years 2-4: NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention and mentored research).

American Postdoctoral Scholarships for Fellow or Research Associate
Position for Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate to study the neural circuits, USA
Job Description: Position at the level of postdoctoral fellow or research associate is available to study the neuronal mechanisms that govern perception and learning. Our focus is to understand the mechanisms of these processes at the circuit level in the visual system. To this end, we employ methods that allow us to study the properties of network of neurons in vivo during behavior. Specifically, we use chronic arrays of tetrodes and in vivo two-photon imaging combined with psychophysical and computational methods. We have developed the capability to record from the same individual neurons across multiple days in awake, behaving primates that gives us the unique opportunity to study how circuits reorganize in vivo during learning. Our lab has also strong interest to develop new technologies to record from interconnected neural circuits using novel imaging and multi-electrode recording methods and also to develop methods – including optogenetic and electrical microstimulation tools – to manipulate the activity of circuits in vivo.
The research scientist for this position will have the opportunity to study brain mechanisms of behavior using one or a combination of these methods.
