Scholarships Description: The Centre for the History of Medicine (CHM) invites applications for a Research Fellow related to the CHM’s Wellcome Trust Strategic Award, Situating Medicine: New Directions in the History of Medicine’. The Fellowship is intended for early career researchers who have no more than two year’s postdoctoral research/teaching experience and who have not held a permanent academic post. You will have an excellent academic record and the potential to pursue your chosen research subject at the highest level.You will be expected to conceptualise and conduct a public engagement project related to you own research interest and in line with the CHM’s Wellcome Trust Strategic Award focus areas.

International Scholarships 2011-12 Knight Fellowships for Professional Journalists from outside the United States at Stanford University.

Overview
The Knight Fellowships awards up to nine fellowships each year to journalists from outside the United States who have already done first-rate work and who have the potential of great impact in journalism in their home countries. The program has revised its selection process to reflect a new emphasis on journalistic innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership, including an emphasis on developing and strengthening press freedoms around the world.


The overall goal for international fellows is the same as those from the U.S. – an engaged, informed public. We are paying special attention to countries where the obstacles to this goal may be more acute than in the U.S. because of government or other powerful forces opposed to free expression.

The program is seeking journalists from countries where the news media can work as a significant agent of change, both in nurturing a free press and fostering innovation. At the same time, we will continue to seek international journalists from countries with a more robust press, especially those who would focus on innovation and entrepreneurship.

Eligibility and Selection:
Applicants ideally will have at least five years of full-time professional experience, but applicants with less experience yet outstanding achievements will also be considered. There are no educational prerequisites. No college degree is required.

In general, applicants should be full-time journalists working for newspapers, wire services, television or radio news departments, Web sites, magazines covering news, commentary, or public affairs, and as full-time freelancers. Who do we consider to be eligible? Journalists who write or edit news, commentary, or editorials; critics and reviewers, photojournalists, editorial cartoonists and supervising editors, anchors, and producers.

In addition, journalism business and management executives whose work influences editorial quality, such as publishers, general managers, and station managers, are also eligible. So are entrepreneurs and innovators whose work or proposals have the potential for great journalistic impact.

Those working in public information or public relations jobs, for trade and house newsletters or magazines, for government agencies, or as teachers, are not eligible.

Fellows must agree to devote their energy during the year to the fellowships itself rather than to regular professional work, to spend the academic terms in residence at Stanford and to participate fully in fellowship seminars and activities. Further, Fellows who apply with the support of their news organizations agree to return to that organization.

Fellows receive a stipend of $60,000 plus supplemental allowances for housing, childcare, health insurance, books, equipment and moving expenses. The program pays Stanford tuition for each Fellow.

All features of the fellowship program are identical to the U.S. Fellows. International Fellows, however, are financed separately by grants from a variety of sources, including the Fulbright program, the Knight Foundation, the Shin-young Journalism Fund, the Lyle and Corrine Nelson International Journalism Fellowships Fund and the Yahoo! International Journalism Fund.

In addition, the selection of International Fellows is designed to ensure that journalists from a wide range of countries and regions are represented, especially countries where a returning Knight Fellow could have a direct impact on the development of a free press and flow of information in their countries.

The Knight Fellowships program reserves one fellowship each year for a journalist from Latin America under special funding from the Knight Foundation. The program also reserves one fellowship each year, using special funding from Yahoo!, for a journalist from a country where there are restrictions on freedom of the press, either by governmental agencies or other forces.

Candidates write two essays: a statement of how they propose to spend their fellowship year and what they expect to have to show for it at the end, and a journalistic autobiography. Applicants who are employed (not freelancers or independent proprietors) must submit a letter from their employer endorsing their application and granting a leave of absence if chosen for a fellowship. Three letters of recommendation, including one from the applicant`s immediate supervisor, are required as well as work samples.

Applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English. All materials submitted must be in English. If samples of the applicant`s work are in another language, English translations must be provided.

Each application is evaluated by the Knight Fellowships staff, supplemented by Stanford faculty members and people outside the program who are knowledgeable about journalism issues in particular countries or regions.

How to Apply: International Fellows
The international application deadline for the 2011-2012 academic year is December 15, 2010. The application will be available in October 2010. The U.S. application deadline for the 2011-2012 academic year is Feb. 1, 2011.

Scholarships Description: Every year the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation selects up-to five Fellows who have set themselves apart through their research achievements, creativity and social commitment. The Fellows are chosen by an independent jury of eminent researchers and intellectuals, after a rigorous selection process. The Foundation does not accept direct applications for these prizes, but establishes a list of candidates based on suggestions put forward by an extensive nomination network in Canada and abroad. The Trudeau Fellowships are of a total value of $225,000. Trudeau Fellows are appointed for a mandate of three years.

African Scholarships Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Michigan

African Scholarships Du Bois-Mandela-Rodney Postdoctoral Fellowship for Scholars working in Africa

The Center for Afroamerican and African Studies (CAAS) at the University of Michigan invites applications for the Du Bois-Mandela-Rodney Post-doctoral Fellowship Program from scholars working on Africa or the African diaspora.

Consideration will be given to all disciplines including – but not limited to – the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences and professional schools. Scholars from or who study the Gullah speaking Sea islands, Cape Verde islands, the Anglophone Caribbean, the Canary Islands, and Madagascar and/or other less studied areas are especially encouraged to apply.


This is a residential fellowships for the academic year. The fellowship package is worth $45,000 plus health insurance coverage. Included in the package is a stipend of $42,000. Health insurance, plus $1,000 for research and up to $2,000 for travel expenses are also included. Successful candidates can expect to maintain affiliations with CAAS as well as departments and research institutes that relate to their projects. Fellows will be expected to conduct a CAAS work-in-progress seminar on their research during one of the semesters in residence.

Eligibility: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand and be no more than five years beyond the completion of their degree. That is, for the 2011-12 academic year, applicants are required to have earned a Ph.D. no earlier than January 1, 2006 and no later than August 31, 2011.

1. The following materials must be compiled and emailed as one document in the exact order as given below. This document should be saved as an Adobe PDF file and must be emailed by 12 midnight November 30:
a. An application form. Applications accepted starting October 1.
b. A cover letter - can include biographical information, an indication of the applicant’s intellectual path and their knowledge of CAAS
c. A curriculum vitae
d. A research proposal and schedule of activities – 3 to 5 pages (1000 words)
e. A writing sample – 15 to 20 pages, double-spaced
Please identify each of the above materials in the top, right corner of each page. For example, all of the pages of your writing sample should have, “writing sample” in the top, right corner.
2. In addition to the above:
a. three letters of recommendation and reference cover sheets must be emailed to CAAS directly from your referees. Each letter and cover-sheet should be emailed as one Adobe PDF file.
All email attachments, including your letters of recommendation, should be sent to gricer@umich.edu.
3. In addition to the above materials, applicants who have not yet completed their Ph.D. must also submit the following materials by November 30.
a. A signed advisor’s verification form from the dissertation advisor stating whether the applicant is likely to complete the dissertation by August 31, 2011.
b. An official transcript or copy of one indicating when the applicant completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation (ABD status). If an applicant who has not yet completed his or her Ph.D. yet is selected to be a fellow, he or she must also submit proof that all the requirements of the Ph.D. have been completed by August 31, 2011, in order to begin the fellowship in September.

Notification: Candidates will be notified of the Fellowships Committee’s decision by
March 1.
